South Bay JACL Scholarship Recipients

KIICHI EGASHIRA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

In December 1987, Mr. Ichio Egashira of Homeland, California established a perpetual scholarship award program in memory of his brother, Kiichi who was an engineer. Administered by the South Bay JACL Chapter, the scholarships are designed to be given to deserving undergraduate and graduate students who are studying in scientific fields including mathematics, engineering, computer science, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy biological and physical science. The first scholarship was awarded in 1989. Since that date there has been over 155 scholarship recipients and over $200,000 awarded to students on behalf of Kiichi Egashira. This year four more students were added to this list.

aiAlyssa Ishimoto, daughter of Wayne and Audrey Ishimoto of Palos Verdes Peninsula, graduated from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in June with many academic achievements including being one of the Palos Verdes Peninsula High School Valedictorians, AP Scholar Awards, National Merit Program Commended Scholar, California Scholarship Federation Sealbearer and a National Honor Society Member. Alyssa was the Go For Broke National Essay Contest Finalist and earned the South Bay Judo Academic Scholarship Award. In 2015 Alyssa was the Peninsula High School Senior Homecoming Princess.
        
Alyssa’s on campus activities at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School includes being a member and team captain of the Peninsula High School Basketball Team, she is a member and Advisor to the Principal’s Council and the Forum Facilitator to the Plus Leadership.

Alyssa’s off campus activities includes being a member and Vice President of Novas of Torrance Memorial Medical Center, an Exhibit Interpreter at the Aquarium of the Pacific and a Shift Leader at the Torrance Memorial Hospital.  In sports Alyssa is a basketball coach and referee for the South Bay F.O.R. and a coach and referee for the South Bay Judo Dojo

Alyssa will be attending the University of California, Los Angeles in the fall, majoring in Biology

eaEmma Anderson, daughter of Tim Anderson and Wendy Asato of Palos Verdes Estates, graduated from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in June. Emma is a California Scholarship Federation Sealbearer.

Emma’s on campus activities at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School includes being a member and President of the Solar Engineering Team and a member of the Science Honor Society.

Emma’s off campus activities includes being the Assistant Principal Violist for the Asia America Youth Symphony, a Koto Player for the Koyokai Los Angeles Music Group and a member of the Student Advisory Board for the Los Angeles Times Student Writer. 

Emma will be attending the University of California, Irvine in the fall, majoring in Computer Science.

kkKelly Kanemitsu, daughter of Dean and Romy Kanemitsu of Rancho Palos Verdes, graduated from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in June with many academic achievements include being an AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Commended Student, member of the National Honor Society and received Achievement in Computer Science. Kelly is also a California Scholarship Federation Sealbearer

Kelly is the Captain and dancer for the Choreo on the Palos Verdes Peninsula Team. She Volunteers at the Torrance Memorial Medical Center and received the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Kelly will be attending the University of California, San Diego in the fall, majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

snShannon Nakamura, daughter of Gary and Clarice Nakamura of Rancho Palos Verdes, graduated from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in June with many academic achievements including the California Scholarship Federation Sealbearer and a member of the National Honor Society. She is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta, Math Honor Society and received the Villanova Book Award in 2015. Shannon was also a member of the US Lacrosse Academic All-American Team. 

Shannon’s on campus activities at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School includes being a member and team captain of the Peninsula High School Lacrosse Team. She was the Commissioner of Clubs on the Student Council and received the Golden Bell Award. She was Treasure and Vice President of the New Life Christian Club and mentor freshmen for the Link Crew.

Shannon’s off campus activities includes being a volunteer for the charity group, EkKardia, she is a member of Freedom4U Peer Mentor, a group that helps prevents drug and alcohol and the Recreation Director for the Missions in Morioka, Japan.

Shannon will be attending the University of California, Berkeley in the fall, majoring in Mechanical Engineering

ssSonoma Saito, daughter of Jun and Yumi Saito of Rancho Palos Verdes, graduated from Palos Verdes High School in June with academic achievements including being a California Scholarship Federation Sealbearer.

Sonoma’s on campus activities includes being the Project Manager for the Palos Verdes Institute of Technology Space Program, the Recording Secretary for the Kiwin’s Club and a dancer for the Choreo on the Palos Verdes Peninsula Team. Sonoma off campus activities includes being a volunteer at the South Bay Keiro Nusing was camp counselor for both the TANOSHII Fun Camp and Nikkei Discovery Camp.

Kelly will be attending the University of California Irvine in the fall, majoring in Environmental
Engineering.
