South Bay JACL Scholarship Recipients

GARDENA VALLEY JACL SCHOLARSHIP
The Gardena Valley Japanese American Citizens League closed its chapter in 2012 but wanted to continue their scholarship program. The South Bay JACL Chapter was asked to provide the platform for their scholarships. This year we were honored to award scholarships to two students.

 

GARDENA VALLEY JACL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS 2016

ziZachary Ishimoto, son Wayne and Audrey Ishimoto of Palos Verdes Peninsula, graduated from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in June with many academic achievements include receiving the AP Scholar Awards, the National Merit Program Commended Scholar, California Scholarship Federation Sealbearer and being a Science National Honor Society Member. Zachary was the Go For Broke National Essay Winner and earned the South Bay Judo Academic Scholarship Award.

Zachary’s on campus activities at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School includes being a member and Team Captain for the Peninsula High School Cross Country Team, the Forum Facilitator for PLUS Leadership and Advisory Council President for the College Career Center. Zachary was also the Advisor to Principal for the Principal’s Council. His off campus activities includes being a member and President of Novas of Torrance Memorial Medical Center and an Exhibit Interpreter at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Zachary is a coach and referee for the South Bay Judo Dojo.

Zachary will be attending the University of Southern California in the fall, majoring in Business.

roRachel Oda, daughter of Steve and Sharon Oda of Rancho Palos Verdes, graduated from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in June with many scholastic honors including the Fredrick B. Douglas and Susan B. Anthony Award, for outstanding commitment to social justice in the classroom and community, a member of the National Honors Society, California Scholarship Federation Sealbearer, member of the Science National Honors Society, Japanese National Honor Society, 1st Place in Excellence in Dance Choreography, from Palos Verdes Peninsula PTA Reflection Contest and the Presidential Group Gold Service.  

Rachel’s on campus activities at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School includes being the Secretary and Commissioner of Clubs on the Associated Student Body, competed in theoretical case at the annual Los Angeles Courthouse Competition, member of the PVP Principal’s Advisory Council and member of the Girls Choreo Dance Group for Palos Verdes Peninsula High School.

Rachel’s off campus activities includes being a member of the National Charity League, volunteering for the Pediatric Therapy Network, for the Little Sister of the Poor and for the Ticktocker Thrift Shop.

Rachel will be attending Pomona College in the fall, majoring in Philosophy, Politics and Economics
