South Bay JACL Scholarship Recipients

KIICHI EGASHIRA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

In December 1987, Mr. Ichio Egashira of Homeland, California established a perpetual scholarship award program in memory of his brother, Kiichi who was an engineer. Administered by the South Bay JACL Chapter, the scholarships are designed to be given to deserving undergraduate and graduate students who are studying in scientific fields including mathematics, engineering, computer science, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy biological and physical science. The first scholarship was awarded in 1989. Since that date, there has been over 163 scholarship recipients and over $210,000 awarded to students on behalf of Kiichi Egashira. This year we added three more recipients, Derek Morimoto, Meggan Uyeda and Brandon Kono-Song

KIICHI EGASHIRA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS FOR 2017

DMDerek Morimoto, son of Myles and Emi Morimoto of Torrance, will graduate from West Torrance High School in June. Derek will graduate with many academic achievements including being on the Principal’s Honor Roll, earned the Citizenship Award since 2013, a member of the National Honor Society and an AP Scholar with Honors. Other achievements, taking 2nd Place High School Division Essay Contest, Go For Broke National Education Center and nominated to be a Math Lab Assistant at West High School.

Derek’s on campus activities include being the Vice President of Outreach for the Interact Club, Vice President of Tutoring for the California Scholarship Federation, Vice President of Communication for the National Honor Society. He is also, a member of the Marching and Concert Band as an Alto Sax Section Leader and a member of the West High Tennis Team.

Derek’s off campus activities include being the Junior YBA President for the Gardena Buddhist Church, Senior Patrol Leader for the Boy Scout Troop #738 and a TANOSHII Fun Camp Counselor in 2015 and 2016. Volunteering at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County he is a trained and certified docent and at the Experium Science Academy as a Lab Assistant in engineering, entomology, physics and robotics.

Derek will be attending the University of California, Berkeley in the fall, majoring in Environmental Engineering.

MUMeggan Uyeda, daughter of Milagros Uyeda of Gardena, will graduate from Narbonne STEM Magnet High School in June. Meggan will graduate with many academic achievements including being a member of the AP Scholar with Honor and Honor Roll in Fall/Spring of 2014, 2015 and 2016. She also received the Achievement and AP Readiness Completion Certificates

Meggan’s on campus activities is comprised of Key Club Historian, National Honor Society Treasurer, member of the Chess Club, Educational Talent Search, Best Buddies, Council for Student Intellec and Editor-in-Chief for Journalism.

Meggan’s off campus activities includes Math and Reading Tutor and volunteering at the Aquarium of the Pacific VolunTEEN program as a VolunTEEN Mentor where teens receive special instruction on many aspects of marine life and the Pacific Ocean; in turn, they share this information with guests at interactive stations in each gallery.

Meggan will be attending the University of California, San Diego in the fall, majoring in Bioengineering.

BKSBrandon Kono-Song, son of Scott Song and Cheryl Kono of Gardena, will graduate from North Torrance High School in June. Brandon will graduate as a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.

Brandon’s on campus activities include ACE Mentorship, Robotics Club, Key Club, Interact Club, Chess Club and member of the Varsity Tennis Team.

Brandon’s off campus activities include volunteering at the North Torrance Public Library as a tutor and to assist Librarians, New Challenge Ministries Food Bank assisting in donation events and Friends of Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve as an Environmental Restoration volunteer to help restore and maintain and enhance the Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve’s natural habitat.

Brandon will be attending the University of California, Santa Cruz in the fall, majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
