South Bay JACL Scholarship Recipients

GARDENA VALLEY JACL SCHOLARSHIP
The Gardena Valley Japanese American Citizens League closed its chapter in 2012 but   wanted to continue their scholarship program. The South Bay JACL Chapter was asked to provide the platform for their scholarships. This year we awarded scholarships to two students: Peyton Hana Bell and Hope Maruyama

 

GARDENA VALLEY JACL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS 2017

PBPeyton Hana Bell, daughter of Aaron and Jennifer Bell of Redondo Beach, will graduate from Redondo Union High School in June. Peyton will graduate with many academic achievements, Member of the California Scholarship Federation, AP Scholar Award College Board, Academic Letter and Pin, Ivy Chain-top percentage of class, President’s Education Award Program Outstanding Academic Achievement, ELC  for University of California and Varsity Scholar Athlete.

Peyton’s on campus activities includes membership in the Semper Club, a school and community service club, Vice President of the HACK/Coding Club, an technology club to learn coding and creating websites, apps and games and Varsity Cross Country/Track teams.

Peyton’s off campus activities includes membership with Youth Ministry, Club Soccer Captain, and Jr. Life Guards, a program that provides instruction in water safety, physical conditioning first aid, lifesaving/rescue/CPR techniques as well as swimming, body surfing and surfing.

Peyton will be attending the University of California, Santa Cruz in the fall, majoring in Computer Science.

GARDENA VALLEY JACL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS 2017

HMHope Maruyama, daughter of Mark Maruyama of Rancho Palos Verdes, will graduate from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in June. Hope will graduate with the following academic achievements, AP Scholar and Presidential Volunteer Service 2014-2016.

Hope’s on campus activities include, membership in National Honor Society, National Sciences Honor Society, National Social Science Honor Society and Nikkei Student Union-President.

Hope’s off campus activities include, Youth Leadership Council President, Junior High Camp Counselor, Sunday School Teacher, Coach for Tigers and FOR, member of Las Comadres community volunteer group, VBS counselor and Tutor with Kumon in English and Math.

Hope will be attending California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in the fall, majoring in Sociology.
